About BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure of body fat based on height and weight. It's calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2
- BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure of body fat or health
- It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or ethnicity
- Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass, not excess fat
- For a more complete picture, consult a healthcare provider who can assess waist circumference, body composition, and other factors
